Add a free membership level to Business Directory
Follow these steps to set up a free membership level for your Business Directory using the Member Manager plugin.
Step 1 – Create Membership Level
Go to Businesses >> Membership Levels – create a membership level for zero dollars.
Step 2 – Message to Free Members
When a new member joins at a paid membership level, they are redirected to Paypal to complete payment.
When a new member joins at the free membership level you can redirect them to a separate page that displays messaging specific to free members.
Create a new page called ‘Message to Free Members’
Next to to CD Settings >> Payments >> Member Manager Settings to map your new page so that members that join at the free membership level will be redirected to this page when they submit the membership form.
If you do not create a ‘Message to Free Members’ page, the user will be sent to Paypal with the following message – “Things don’t appear to be working at the moment. Please try again later.”
Step 3 – Test your setup
When a new member joins at the free membership level, the following updates are made to your site:
- A new listing is automatically created in your Business Directory.
- A new invoice is created & connected to the Business.
- Invoice is marked ‘pending’ and must be manually set to ‘paid’ or the listing will be automatically set to ‘lapsed’.
- A new People record is created & connected to the Business listing.
- A new WordPress user record is created & connected to the People record.
- Using Member Updater plugin – WordPress user is assigned the ‘Business Editor’ role which allows them to edit their Business listing.
Once the Business & People records have been published, the new member can login to the member account page to view their invoice.
NOTE: If donation or processing fees are added to the Free Membership level, the user will be taken to Paypal to complete payment.
Free Membership Renewals
When a member joins at the free membership level, no membership renewal date (MRD) is set in their Business listing. As long as their original invoice gets marked ‘paid’, their listing will not expire or be set to lapsed status.
To set free listings to lapse after one year:
At the free membership level, the Business status is not automatically set to current. If you want the listing to automatically stop showing after a period of time. Enter a membership renewal date (MRD) in the listing and mark the Business as current when the member joins.
The Recurring Payments plugin will use the membership renewal date (MRD) to create an invoice and send a renewal reminder when it is time to renew.
If the invoice is not paid, the listing will automatically be marked ‘lapsed’ when the invoice becomes overdue.
To encourage members to upgrade to a paid listing
When it is time to renew, the Recurring Payments plugin sends a renewal reminder with a link to an invoice for payment.
To encourage members to upgrade to a paid listing:
First remove the free membership level from your renewal form – go to CD Settings >> Payments >> Member Manager Settings.
Next remove the invoice link from the renewal reminder – go to CD Settings >> Recurring Payment Options >> Recurring Payment Settings.
Then update the text in the Recurring Payment invoice message. For example:
When member upgrades new membership level using the renewal form, their new membership level is automatically updated in their Business listing and the membership renewal date (MRD) is automatically updated in their Business listing.
NOTE: When using the Recurring Payments plugin to generate renewal invoices & reminders, if a member upgrades using the renewal form, a second invoice is generated. Be sure to mark the first invoice as paid so that the Business listing does not lapse.
